The National Armed Forces Świętokrzyska Brigade was established on 11 August 1944. Her soldiers fought for the independency of the Republic with both German and russian occupiers, as well as in actions aimed at defending civilians against the criminal robbery of band robberies.
One of the most glorious acts of the soldiers of the Świętokrzyska Brigade was the liberation of the German concentration camp for women in Holiszów (the Flossenbürg KL subsidiary). At the turn of April and May 1945, the Brigade took part in dense fighting against Germany in the Czech Republic, acting together with the 3rd Army soldiers Gen. George S. Patton. The Brigade soldiers together with US troops, among others, took prisoner the staff of the 13th German Army (including 2 generals). In evidence of designation and emphasis that the Świętokrzyska Brigade is an allied unit, the Americans allowed its soldiers and officers – as the only Polish unit – to bear the signs of the US Army.
