Szczecin: On the anniversary of the strike in Shipyard

Wednesday 23 January at the office Witold Pilecki Patriotic Foundation in Szczecin there was a gathering with the manager – Joanna Pieciukiewicz (including the author of the documentary “Honor General” about Gen. Sosabowski and the cycle “Children of Volyn”, as well as a screening of the documentary “Our Day and Yours”.

The gathering celebrated the anniversary of the outbreak of the strike at the Adolf Warski SSN, which took place on 23 January 1971. The movie besides touched this strike, but besides shows, through the prism of circumstantial human fates, what the revolt of the Szczecin community looked like. Protesters of workers demanded wage increases and improved working conditions. The strike rapidly spread, covering another plants in Szczecin and Gdańsk, which strengthened its strength and affected the increasing social tension. These events had a crucial impact on the improvement of opposition movement in the Polish People's Republic and later events, including the emergence of “Solidarity” in 1980.

The movie shows, besides in a unique way (records, photos, films) how the revolt looked, but besides how the communist authorities behaved, sending troops and militias to the streets of Szczecin, which massacred the population (the communist authorities reported the number of 16 people killed and respective 100 wounded). After the screening, a discussion took place with the manager of the film, during which themes were discussed, among others, about the creation of the document, reaching out to witnesses of history, acquiring unique materials utilized in the film. The gathering included people who participated in the Szczecin rebellion in December 1970.
