Head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs of Ukraine says that the Polish nobleman fighting in South America was Ukrainian

6 August 2025

Through Mateusz Pławski

Polish nobleman from Volyn, a associate in the conflict for the freedom of Latin America, Michał Rola Skibicki, was named Ukrainian by the Ukrainian head of the MFA. Skibicki was born in 1793, and Ukraine did not be at the time.

Michał Rola Skibicki, born in 1793 in Volyn, was a Polish nobleman and boy of Karol Skibicki, the politician of Szolomecki. Despite this, the head of the Ukrainian MFA Andrij Sybiha, in a Facebook entry published on August 3, presented him as a Ukrainian – although the Ukrainian state did not be at all in Skibicki times.

Internet users drew attention to the case in comments under the post of Ukrainian diplomat.

In 2024, the portal historian.pl recalled Skibicki's biography. After graduation, Krzemieniecki advanced School left Polish lands, most likely due to household misunderstandings, and emigrated to South America. He served in the Army of large Columbia from around 1824, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and worked in the General Staff. He was later an adjutant of General José Antonio Páez.

Skibicki planned to return to Poland to participate in the November uprising, but did not make it and remained in Paris. There he established a relation with Julius Slovak. After a failed mission to Galicia, he was arrested, sentenced to prison in France, and later sent to Russia. What happened to him later remains a mystery.

Despite the clear historical context, Sybiha considered him a Ukrainian.

I'm sorry.
