Duka International, a well-known Swedish chain of interior fittings stores, found herself in serious financial trouble. On 15 November 2024, the Warsaw territory Court opened a medical investigation against the company and appointed a manager – Rymarz Zdort Kubiczek Resturing. This decision is part of an extended restructuring process aimed at saving brand activity in Poland.

They close shops, they put on online sales

In 2023 Duka had 60 stationary shops in Poland. By the end of 2024, their number fell to just 34, and now – in the beginning of 2025 – the network already operates only 32 locations. This means closing as many as 28 points of sale within a twelve months.

As the portal forhandlu.pl informs, the company implements a restructuring plan developed by the administrator. Among the key elements of the strategy are the improvement of online sales channels and the presence in marketplaces, the expansion of the offer of products produced in the European Union, as well as investments in the smart kitchen segment. The plan besides involves further reducing the number of fixed shops and reducing debt levels.

UOKiK punished the company for unfair practices

Duka's problems deepened in 2023 erstwhile the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection imposed a punishment of over PLN 1.5 million on the company for utilizing unfair practices. The company automatically added additional products specified as cups or umbrellas to the customer's baskets without their express consent. This practice was applied for almost a year and required customers to manually remove unwanted products, which frequently eluded their attention. UOKiK ordered Duka global to compensate for losses suffered by customers, which undoubtedly affected the brand's assurance and financial performance.

Financial condition and past of public support

In 2023, despite the challenges, the company showed a net profit of PLN 4.7 million. At the same time, 3 shops (including 1 franchise) were closed and 4 another franchises were taken over. Duka presently employs about 120 people.

It is besides worth reminding that in 2020 the company received a grant from the Polish improvement Fund of PLN 3.5 million. Of this amount PLN 1,224,431.25 was decommissioned, and the remainder was paid in instalments, the repayment of which ended in June 2023.

The future is uncertain, but there is an action plan

Duka global continues restructuring in the hope of restoring its marketplace position. The transfer of business burden to e-commerce channels and the optimisation of operating costs may constitute an chance to last and further make the brand in Poland. However, competition in the interior fittings sector is strong and consumer assurance – especially after the decision of the UOKiK – requires reconstruction.
