FLORIDA- Spirit Airlines (NK) has announced a significant reduction in its Las Vegas operations, cutting 54% of its flights this winter. Starting October 2, 2025, the airline will discontinue service to eight cities from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), including Albuquerque, Boise, Portland, Salt Lake City, Sacramento, Oakland, San Diego, and San Jose.

This move follows Spirit’s second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing within a year, as the airline seeks to restructure and stabilize its finances.

Spirit Airlines Las Vegas Flight Cuts

The route eliminations are part of a broader strategy to shrink Spirit’s fleet and focus on more profitable markets. The airline aims to reduce its capacity by 3.9% in October 2025, impacting over 3,000 flights.

Despite these cuts, Spirit assures passengers that it will continue to offer “high-value travel options” across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Las Vegas (LAS) will be the most affected airport by Spirit’s winter flight reductions. The airline’s decision to end service to eight cities from LAS will significantly impact travelers seeking affordable options to these destinations. However, each of these markets is also served by other airlines, providing alternative travel options for passengers.

Passengers booked on canceled flights are entitled to refunds under U.S. Department of Transportation policies. Spirit advises affected travelers to contact the airline directly for assistance with rebooking or obtaining refunds.

According to Simple Flying, the following indicate Spirit’s flight cuts across various airports:

Airport Flight Cuts (In %)
Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) 99.2%
Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP) 100%
Oakland International Airport (OAK) 99.1%
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) 100%
Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) 100%

Competitors Expand Services

In response to Spirit’s flight reductions, United Airlines (UA) is expanding its winter schedule to include new flights to Las Vegas.

Starting January 6, 2026, United will add routes from Chicago and Houston to LAS, aiming to accommodate passengers affected by Spirit’s cuts.

This expansion underscores the competitive dynamics in the U.S. aviation market as airlines adjust to shifts in demand and capacity.

Bottom Line

Spirit Airlines’ decision to reduce its Las Vegas operations is part of a broader effort to address its financial challenges. The airline has faced mounting losses, including a $245.8 million net loss in the most recent quarter, and has been unable to establish a sustainable turnaround after its first bankruptcy filing in 2024.

As part of its restructuring plan, Spirit is focusing on key airports such as Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

While Spirit maintains that the bankruptcy is part of a strategy to ensure long-term success, analysts warn that the airline’s financial instability may lead to further cuts and potential challenges in maintaining operations.
