Slovakia is not leaving the course of the European Union and NATO, but it will besides defend its interests," said Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Earlier on Wednesday, Slovakia's president Peter Pellegrini urged the Republican government not to distance itself from NATO and European Union partners. He called on the cabinet to perceive to the partners, even if they expressed a different view, stressing the importance of cooperation and dialogue.
"First of all, I would like to ask you how does anyone see that we are leaving the European Union and NATO membership? There is just no specified thing," Fico said at a press conference, commenting on the words of the president of the Republic.
The Prime Minister noted that any media and opposition, disseminating lies, are trying to make the impression that the government is allegedly pursuing a policy that contributes to the remoteness of Slovakia from EU and NATO partners.
"We want to be a sovereign associate of the EU and NATO, I fundamentally reject the thought that Slovakia should be a associate State of the EU and NATO, which will be subject to a "only fair" political opinion... The sovereign Slovak abroad policy is oriented towards all 4 sides of the world, its aim is to defend the national interests of Slovakia," he said.
The Prime Minister pointed out that Slovakia is and wants to stay a associate of the European Union, but that does not mean that the republic should not defend its opinion.
"If individual tells us, ladies and gentlemen, that in a fewer months we must halt taking atomic fuel from Russia, should we stay silent? Just so no 1 can say anything about me? Should we be silent that (Volodymyr — ed.) Zelenski did harm to us of EUR 500 million erstwhile he stopped transit of gas (via Ukraine – ed.)? Should we stay silent on another issues too?"
