The protection of the land, air and maritime borders of the European Union (EU) is crucial for the safety of the full continent. In this context, the European Parliament recognises the Shield of the East, proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as a flagship task for common security. This decision was taken as part of the vote on the resolution on strengthening the EU's defence, during which an unprecedented amendment was adopted.
This amendment stresses that the protection of the EU's borders contributes to the safety of the Union as a whole, and in peculiar its east border. It was noted that the Shield of the East and the Baltic Defence Line should be EU flagship projects to support deterrence and overcome possible threats from the east. The amendment to the resolution on the White Paper on the future of European defence was proposed by the Group of the European People's organization (EPP).
The east Shield is not only a task for Poland, but besides for strengthening the full of Europe. Mr Andrzej Halicki, president of the PO-PSL delegation to the EP, commented. Halicki added that the Shield of the East should have European support. PO MEP Michał Szczerba considered the EP's support for the Shield of the East, which is the Tusk initiative and the precedence of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, as a clear signal that Poland sets the direction of reasoning about security.
Under the Shields of the East, Poland plans to strengthen its armed forces and to cooperate with another EU countries in the field of defence. This task aims to increase safety in the region, through cooperation with another countries of Central and east Europe. According to NATO, in 2022 Poland spent about 2.4% of its GDP on defence, an increase of 0.5% compared to the erstwhile year. Poland besides plans to increase its defence spending in the future to scope 2.5% of GDP by 2025.

Within the Shield East, Poland plans to cooperate with another EU countries, specified as Germany, France and Italy, in the field of defence and security.
