German Chancellor Olaf Scholz appealed to the government to take his time and carefully consider the possible procedure for the illegalization of the alternate organization for Germany (AfD)", Reuters states.
Previously, the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution gave alternatively for Germany (AfD) the position of an utmost right organization across the country. This decision will extend the arsenal of surveillance tools available to the organisation, and is considered to be 1 of the indirect steps towards the illegalisation of the organization which, according to a number of fresh polls, overtakes the block of the Christian-Democratic and Christian-Social Union (CDU/CSU) which won the early elections.
"I am against a fast strike. We must carefully consider this classification" – Scholz commented on the counterintelligence decision at the Protestant Church conference in Hannover.
Scholz explained that there should be no rush in the possible procedure for illegalisation of the party.
In 2023 the national Office for the Protection of the Constitution recognized the AfD troops in Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt as far-right.
At national level, the organization has until late only been suspected of extremism, which is considered a lesser threat. In June 2023, the German Institute of Human Rights published a study stating that the conditions for the illegalisation of AfD were met. AfD itself accuses the German authorities of stalking the organization and suppressing the opposition.
