SAS Starlink Wifi

SpaceX’s Starlink network, utilizing low Earth orbit satellites, delivers unprecedented internet coverage to commercial aircraft.

The system’s advanced satellite constellation ensures consistent connectivity across challenging regions, including the North Pole, Atlantic Ocean, and North Sea, where traditional satellite services often struggle to maintain reliable connections.

The new service eliminates traditional connectivity barriers, offering passengers in all travel classes access to high-speed, low-latency internet at no additional cost. EuroBonus members automatically receive access to this premium feature as part of their membership benefits.

Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, emphasizes the transformation this technology brings to the passenger experience. “We’re connecting our passengers to the world like never before,” Verhagen states. “This advancement eliminates connectivity disruptions and establishes a new standard for in-flight internet service.”

The initiative positions SAS at the forefront of aviation technology integration, as the airline becomes one of the first major carriers to implement fleet-wide Starlink connectivity.

Gate-to-Gate Wi-Fi Service

Scandinavian Airlines advances its digital transformation by implementing continuous Wi-Fi connectivity from boarding to disembarkation. This enhancement surpasses traditional systems that operate exclusively between takeoff and landing.

Jason Fritch, SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales, emphasizes the service’s superior performance. “Starlink delivers home-equivalent internet speeds across challenging regions like the Atlantic, North Sea, and North Pole,” Fritch states. The technology maintains consistent connectivity in areas where conventional in-flight internet services typically falter.

SAS Chief Commercial Officer Paul Verhagen underscores the operational impact. “Gate-to-gate connectivity transforms how travelers work and communicate during flights,” Verhagen explains. The service enables uninterrupted access to business tools and entertainment throughout the journey.

The implementation incorporates aerodynamic considerations through specialized Starlink aeroterminals. These components reduce drag and fuel consumption, aligning with SAS’s commitment to sustainable aviation practices.

The system supports simultaneous multi-device connectivity, enabling passengers to operate multiple devices concurrently. Users can seamlessly switch between smartphones, tablets, and laptops while maintaining consistent performance levels.

The airline confirms the service deployment will commence in late 2025, integrating the technology across its fleet. This implementation establishes a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity in commercial aviation.

New Routes

Scandinavian Airlines initiates new flight services today (January 27, 2025) between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and both Halmstad City Airport and Kalmar Öland Airport. These routes strengthen Sweden’s domestic air network connectivity from north to south.

The expansion enhances SAS’s Swedish domestic network, improving travel accessibility throughout the country. Stockholm Arlanda serves as the primary hub, facilitating connections to both domestic destinations and international flights through Copenhagen.

Edward Fotheringham, Vice President of Global Sales at SAS, emphasizes the strategic importance of these routes. “The launch of Halmstad and Kalmar operations strengthens Sweden’s travel infrastructure for both business and leisure travelers, contributing to national economic growth across sectors,” Fotheringham states.

The Halmstad region functions as a critical business development center in southwestern Sweden, combining coastal attractions with cultural amenities. Anders Thornberg, Governor of Halland County, highlights the route’s significance: “The Halmstad-Stockholm air connection strengthens Sweden’s infrastructure, supporting business operations, government functions, and defense preparedness.”

Kalmar’s economic landscape combines entrepreneurial innovation with established business communities. The region attracts tourists through its historical sites and the natural landscapes of Öland island.

Ronny Lindberg, CEO at Kalmar Öland Airport, emphasizes the economic implications: “SAS’s hub operation through Arlanda creates vital growth opportunities for our region that require active engagement from all stakeholders.”

SAS’s domestic network expansion in 2025 encompasses new routes to Halmstad, Kalmar, and Sälen, alongside frequency increases on existing routes. The partnership with Braathens Airways AB (BRA) as a subcontractor enables this network growth.
