Russian jet drones hit the Cersanit Invest mill in Zwiahl, Ukraine on the night of 11 to 12 September. The workers were evacuated and no 1 was killed, but the harm to key production elements stopped the plant. The company estimates that recovery will take at least six months.

Serious harm to the mill in Zwiehl

The attack touched the Cersanit Invest plant in Zwiehl, in the Rytomier region. The company reported that the impact was carried out utilizing jet drones. All workers at the time were safely evacuated. Nobody died.

In the authoritative Cersanit message stated that the key elements of the ceramic tiles production cycle were severely damaged. The plant cannot now resume its work or proceed average business. A detailed estimation of harm and failure is underway.

Effective evacuation protected people from the worst effect of nightfall. This does not change the economical dimension of the attack. The demolition of devices forming 1 technological series can halt the full factory, even erstwhile the remaining halls are inactive standing. Therefore, the failure assessment cannot be reduced to the number of damaged buildings. The ability of the plant to resume production is important.

At least six months without full power

The first assessment of the company is hard: the restoration of production capacity will take at least six months. This is not a short method outage, but a long-term exclusion of crucial assets of the Polish group operating on the Ukrainian market. The company secures the area and puts crew safety first.

The first information indicated that fire after impact was put out. However, it was only later that the company’s assessment showed a fuller dimension of losses. The fire was contained, but the harm to the production infrastructure shut down the mill for months.

Russia besides hits Polish capital

Cersanit Invest belongs to the Polish Cersanit group. The attack shows that the Russian war is destroying not only Ukrainian public and military infrastructure. It besides hits private companies, workplaces and abroad investors, including Polish companies.

For Poland, the stakes are specific. The aim is to defend home capital, the safety of workers and the risks to Ukrainian companies. Losses of 1 bet are not an abstract position in the war balance. It's frozen production, the cost of rebuilding and uncertainty for the people associated with the factory.

War closer to Polish interests

The strike in Zwiehl falls into a series of Russian attacks on the western part of Ukraine. On the same days Russian drones besides hit close the Polish border. Each incidental recalls that the safety of the Polish airspace and infrastructure cannot be based on calming declarations. Efficient detection systems, anti-aircraft defence and clear consequence procedures are needed.

Russia is at war without looking at the economical costs of civilians and businesses. The answer of Poland should be cold realism: effective defence of its own territory, support for resisting Russian aggression and protection of Polish economical interests. The case of Cersanite shows the price of defencelessness in the most literal way.
