Russia is again ahead of the US as the second largest gas supplier to the European Union. In the second 4th of 2023 Russian gas supplies amounted to 12.73 billion m3, accounting for about 17% of EU imports. For comparison, the US delivered 12.27 billion lLNG, despite earlier efforts to supply the alleged “Freedom Gas” to free Europe from energy dependence on Russia.

Russia supplies gas through 3 channels: LNG, TurkStream and transit through Ukraine, which inactive operates despite the ongoing war. This shows how profoundly rooted Europe's dependence on Russian supplies is.

Although Norway remains the largest gas supplier to the EU, Russia strengthens its position despite US attempts to advance its LNG as an alternative. The crucial question is whether the situation will change after 2024, erstwhile Ukraine plans to end Russian gas transit through its territory.
