A group of MPs submitted an interpelling to the Ministry of Infrastructure, in which he calls for the removal of the maneuvering area from courses and driving tests. How do they argue this controversial change?
Is a driver's test without a manoeuvring area a good idea?
According to parliamentarians, exercises on the manoeuvring area are not necessary, as is besides confirmed by EU regulations in force in many European countries. presently Polish students must show skills specified as:
- riding the arch forward and rear,
- stopping at a designated location,
- moving on a hill.
Members believe that these elements come from the 1960s erstwhile traffic was much smaller. According to them, the manoeuvring area only checks the learned schematics without preparing future drivers for real road situations. They propose that alternatively of exercise in the square increase the emphasis on driving in traffic.
30% of candidates neglect the exam already in the square
The authors of the interview indicate that 30% candidates do not even leave the area of the examination centre as they neglect to pass the test on the maneuvering area. They mention to investigation International Commission for Training and Examination on Driving Law (CIECA)which prove that the exercises under artificial conditions do not translate into improved road safety.
More hours of training for young drivers?
The proposals for changes concern not only the exam itself, but besides the full training process. Motor Transport Institute (ITS) proposed to extend the driving learning period.
– This is about the anticipation of starting early education in the care of an accompanying person – says Mikołaj Krupiński from ITS. – This allows young drivers to gain safety experience for 2 years before entering the right course. The current 30 hours of training is not adequate to prepare for all situations on the road.
Young drivers most frequently origin accidents
Statistics Police Headquarters confirm that the youngest drivers (18-24 years) are the group with the highest accident rate. W 2024 was 11.79 per 10,000 people. For comparison:
- 25-39 years old 7.22,
- among drivers 40–59 years old – 5,55.
Will the proposed changes improve road safety? We await the decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
