Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart published on her social profile a post that raised large interest in the public. It afraid the stay of Mr Dariusz Matecki in the Służewiec Investigation Arrest, where he spent 4 days in a transitional cell. Along with the description, the Deputy Minister posted a photograph of the cell, allowing users to see the conditions under which he was incarcerated.

Transitional cell: Standard procedure or peculiar treatment?

According to Deputy Minister Ejchart, Mr Matecki was in a transitional cell, which is simply a standard procedure for recently arrived inmates. For safety reasons, the cell was one-man, monitored, decommissioned radiator and equipment that could pose a threat. – He is treated like all t/a (temporaryly arrested – ed.) said Ejchart.

The cell was described as vandaloresistant, suggesting that it was designed in a way that minimised its possible damage. The photograph shows a tiny table with an electrical kettle, a green cup, a fewer packages of food (including instant noodles and another food products) and sanitary tissues. A window with bars is visible in the background, and there is simply a black bag on the floor, most likely with individual items embedded. The cell seems minimalist but functional. On a rolling stock bolted to the floor, we see a iconic “ZK-AS” towel located.

Basic facilities for transitional purposes

TVs and kettles are available for this kind of purpose, called ‘passengers’, to supply the embedded with basic facilities. Maria Ejchart stressed that Mr Matecki had been treated as much as any another temporarily arrested, and his cell was 1 of the 19 available "transitions" in custody in Służewiec.

History of the Investigative Arrest on the Servant

The Investigative Arrest in Służewiec, located at 5 Kłobucka Street in Ursynów, has a long history. According to Wikipedia, in 1944–1956, they functioned as the Centre for Labour Służewiec, and since 1957 as a penal and investigative prison of the first class, capable of holding up to 1000 prisoners. Since 2005, the detention has undergone a thorough modernization in which the old pavilions were replaced with modern buildings. Currently, the facility can accommodate 1080 inmates and employment about 280 officers and 20 civilian workers.

Summary

The conditions under which Mr Matecki was staying are consistent with the standards in force for temporary arrests. The transition cell, although minimalist, provides basic amenities specified as tv or kettle access. The publication of a photograph of the cell by Deputy Minister Ejchart allowed the public to better realize the reality of life in custody.
