President Chorzov calls on the state authorities to save the Royal Huta.

According to “Kurier Chorzowski”, president Szymon Michałek calls on the Minister of State Acts to intervene on the Royal Huta case. The plant operating for more than 220 years decided to close its current owner – the large ArcelorMittal company – We wrote about it here.. president Chorzowa calls for the government to undertake to rescue the plant as it had done earlier with Huta Częstochowa. Here's the full letter:

Sir,

The closure of the Royal Huta Branch in Chorzów is simply a decision that has shaken our city and the full region. It strikes straight at workers, and symbolically – on Chorzów's historical heritage. This is an highly hard minute for our city, especially as it falls in a time requiring strengthening alternatively than limiting national industrial capacities, especially in the light of the current geopolitical situation.

The Royal Huta, which has been operating almost continuously since 1802, co-founded the economical foundations of advanced Silesia and for generations was 1 of the pillars of Chorzów's development. It is simply a plant that gave emergence to our city – from its name “Königshütte” and then “King Królewska Huta” to shaping local identity and social life. Its closure means the failure of unique production competences and an crucial part of national steel infrastructure.

Under current geopolitical conditions, any specified failure constitutes a real weakening of the safety of the state.

The example of Huta Częstochowa shows that the state is able to respond effectively in emergency situations to plants of strategical importance. It is included in the list of entities subject to State protection, subject to the supervision of MON and the organisation of the acquisition and resumption of production by Węglokoks, a company of the State Treasury, which has led to the rescue of jobs and the restoration of unchangeable operations of the plant. This model proved effective and showed that liable State intervention could reverse negative trends and reconstruct key industrial capacities.

In this connection, I appeal to the Minister:

• urgent inclusion of the Ministry of State Acts in talks with ArcelorMittal,

• to consider taking the Royal Huta into State protection, analogous to the actions taken against Huta Częstochowa,

• an analysis of the anticipation of capital or organisational intervention which would halt the liquidation process.

Minister, present the destiny of not only employees of the Royal Huta is at stake, but besides any of the national steel competences that would be highly hard and long-lasting to rebuild after the plant has been closed. all failure in home steel production limits our ability to respond to crisis situations, and in current geopolitical realities, maintaining a stable, dispersed and safe industrial infrastructure is crucial for the full country. I believe that your commitment and the instruments under the authority of the Ministry of State Acts can aid to halt this process and prevent losses that would affect both the Chorzów and the Polish economy.

I declare my readiness to discuss with the Minister and the ArcelorMittal authorities on possible further action and verification of the decisions taken in order to reduce the negative effects of the current situation and to preserve the region's industrial potential.
