We're at a turning point. The planet will no longer be the same after the U.S. presidential election, independent of who wins. Europe will collapse – warns the Portuguese president Marcelo Rebello de Sousa.

The president gave a speech on Sunday at the end of the National Youth gathering in Aveiro. He noted that "we are at the end of 1 historical cycle and at the beginning of another, in the world, in Europe and Portugal." He added that “we are at a turning point” and “the planet will not be the same in a year or six months.” – It will not be the same after the American elections, regardless of the outcome, it will be different. It will not be the same after the changes in China that have had difficulty managing the pandemic and economical recovery (...) will not be the same erstwhile the Russian Federation or emerging powers are positioned: South Africa, Brazil, Turkey and India He commented.

The head of state pointed out that "there is indeed a sense of transformation and wars, the number of which increases in periods of uncertainty and unpredictability, hence the request to fight for peace in Europe, Africa, but besides in the mediate East; peace in many places that are spoken of and in many places that are not mentioned."

The president felt that all political systems designed after planet War II did not respond to today's challenges. They survived through “inertia”.

"European political systems are in a deep crisis, which is why voids are beginning up in which fresh inorganic realities enter, any of which are called populist ones, due to the fact that systems designed for the post-WWII period and designed for the post-transformation period during the transition from the 20th to the 21st century are in crisis. They did not adapt to digitalisation, to energy change, to technological and technological progress, to mobility, to the aspirations of young people. They're old. He stressed.

He pointed out that everything was old: ideas, structures, the way their organizations and people were. This is expected to be a major problem for Europe, which "remains behind", although it leads the "fight for climate action, it continues to lead the fight against migration, with refugees", but "lost momentum". This problem is besides seen in Portugal.

The president urged young people to effort to get into decision centres, local authorities, central authorities and another institutions to transform them according to their knowledge. This is knowledge, not money – although they are crucial besides – they will yet transform the political system.

Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa born 12 December 1948 is simply a prof. of law, journalist, political analyst, parliamentarian. He has served as president of the Portuguese Republic since 2016. Linked to the Social Democrats – suspended organization membership for the presidency. He was besides a minister before. He was head of the Institute of Legal and Political Sciences at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon until winning the 2016 presidential election. In his youth, he worked in Catholic movements, but since 1974 he has been associated with the Social Democratic Party.

In his speech to the Euro MPs last May, the president considered Russian aggression against Ukraine to be "a shocking mistake by the Russian Federation". He pointed out that it was urgent to guarantee that “fair and moral peace” was the consequence of this war, preventing further conflicts.

The Portuguese spoke of a "new strategy of forces" in the world, calling for a more active function for the EU. He utilized the word for the EU to play “the largest, strongest possible role! If not, he will end up as the smallest, weakest" in the arrangement of forces.

Rebello de Sousa advocates enlargement of the EU and speeding up Europe's economical recovery to fight inflation. He called for openness and cooperation with another countries to jointly address challenges specified as migration, and to increase Europe's global impact.

He felt that "EU values" should take precedence over national interests and that the EU itself should be a pioneer in climate, energy and digital policy. Otherwise, “it will fall behind”.

He besides called for the EU to follow the example of another continents and to act erstwhile essential and to revive the EU's political, economical and social systems. Otherwise, it will alienate young people and strengthen populism and antisystem movements.
