Poland's decadence – population falls but fresh cities are created

According to demographic forecast, prepared by ZUS, the population of Poland will fall from 37.4 million people in 2025 to 27.2 million in 2080. However, demographic disasters do not hinder the artificial expansion of cities and even the creation of fresh ones.

The study "Prognosis of the Inflows and Spending of the Pension Fund by 2080", which was published in the ZUS Public Information Bulletin, indicated that the population of the country would fall from 37.4 million in 2025 to 31.7 million in 2060 and to 27.2 million in 2080. This means that the population will be little than 10.1 million people today, i.e. 27.1%.

The study notes that the number of pre-production age (0-17 years) is decreasing by 2040. "In the period 2041-2050, this figure remains akin (4.6-4.7 million people), after which it falls, reaching 3.2 million lower in 2080 than in 2025", explained.

In turn, the working-age population (men aged 18-64 and women aged 18-59) is inactive decreasing, reaching 6.4 million lower than in 2025 in 2060, and 9.2 million lower in 2080 than in 2025, 42.3%.

According to the report, the population of people of post-production age (men aged 65 and over and women aged 60 and over) grows to 2057, reaching 12.3 million, i.e. 3.3 million higher than in 2025 (an increase of 36.7 percent). "Since 2058, the post-production population has fallen to 11.3 million in 2080. The decline in the post-production age after 2057 is linked, on the 1 hand, to the extinction of the demographic boom of the 1980s and, on the another hand, to the entry into the post-production age of people from below the demographic turn of the 20th and 21st century." Meanwhile, on January 1, 2026, six Polish towns received city rights. It is Stanislawów (pow. miński), Malkinia Górna (pow. ostrowski) and Staroźreby (pow. płocki). The towns were besides Janów Podlaski (Pow. Białski, Lubelskie), Branice (Pow. głubczycki, Opolskie) and Janów (Pow. Częstochowa, Śląskie).
