Some 70 percent of Swiss respondents are in favour of closer cooperation with NATO, but the thought of full membership of the alliance is inactive not widely supported, according to a survey conducted by the Swiss paper 20 Minutesen and Swiss media holding company Tamedia.
According to published data, 71 percent of respondents have a affirmative attitude towards the thought of stepping up cooperation with NATO. Even among the supporters of the right-wing Swiss People's organization (SVP), which traditionally advocates neutrality, 49 percent believe closer cooperation with the alliance is simply a reasonable step.
In addition, 77% of the survey participants supported the thought of strengthening safety cooperation with the European Union.
At the same time, the thought of joining NATO remains unpopular: only 37% of the Swiss expressed their desire to support this step, which would mean abandoning the conventional neutrality of the country.
A full of 35 132 people participated in the survey. It was carried out from 31 March to 1 April 2025. Data on the margin of mistake are not provided.
