Marek Tucholski at the National Movement press conference, 6 December 2024.
Marek Tucholski:
– A deal with Mercosur, if implemented, will be a powerful blow to our agri-food industry.
Let us remind you that our agriculture has already received 2 powerful blows. 1 is the Green Deal and the another is imports from Ukraine. Unlimited practically, at least in the first phase after the start of the war in Ukraine, import.
We have “technical cereals” from Ukraine on the 1 hand, and on the another hand we have “technical food” from Mercosur. This is simply a hit on our agriculture, another which bears immense costs associated with the Green Deal.
There's a strategical dialog on the horizon, which will be another hit in agriculture!
And in this situation, our farmers, no wonder they are protesting. In this situation, our agricultural and farming industries, which besides work for farmers, are in crisis. The deal with Mercosur could be a proverbial nail to the coffin.
Let us remind that the European Union imposes very large restrictions on farmers, on food production in the European Union, has very advanced requirements. And at the same time they are hypocrites, Eurocrats are hypocrites due to the fact that they do not head the food that will be sold in the European Union, will come from the Mercosur countries, which is produced utilizing pesticides or hormones not authorised in the European Union!
This agreement, of course, does not pay us as Poland and any European Union countries are not worth it, but there are countries that see an chance in it. It's Germany, among another things.
And now we gotta answer the question, whether we will sacrifice our agriculture to the German industry, especially the automotive industry, which are looking for a marketplace in South America for their products and at the same time search natural materials for the German industry, including the automotive industry.
Raw materials specified as uncommon earth metals specified as lithium, specified as nickel, obtained in South America, are needed for the German industry, are needed for German energy policy, which assumes transformation in the spirit of weather-related sources.
This situation shows that we as a country gain nothing from it, they gain from it, among another things Germany and, of course, it is not in our interest to go to the hands of Germany due to the fact that we have nothing of it.
We should not sacrifice our agriculture in the interests of the German industry, the German automotive industry, which is in a hard situation, it is true, but they are in a hard situation, due to the fact that this is the consequence of the policies of the European Union and Germany itself, which are striving to push the Green Deal.
As Poland we have our interests and these our interests we should defend! Defending the interests of Poland at this point is doing everything to block this agreement, so that it does not come into being implemented. The Polish government has the chance to decide whether it defends Poland's interests more, whether it prefers German interests or another interests.
An agreement between the EU and the Mercosur countries at the conclusion, Ursula von der Leyen in South America announced the swift signing of this agreement.
