Poland has 1 of the lowest innovation places in the European Union, ranked 5th from the end, according to the latest Innovation Scoreboard study published by the Euro CommissionPeese. This study was discussed in item by the Polish economical Institute (PIE).
Problems of Polish innovation
According to the analysis of the PIE, the key problem of Poland is the low innovation of the technological environment and the deficit of intellectual assets. "The main weaknesses are the low percent of PhD graduates, including a peculiarly low number of abroad students, and a tiny number of PCT patent applications," the institute emphasises. It is these factors that importantly reduce the overall level of innovation in the country.
Despite any strengths, specified as advanced plan applications and a comparatively advanced percent of the population with higher education, these affirmative aspects are not adequate to catch up in another key areas.
Polish innovation against the background of the European Union
The full innovation index in Poland was 72.5 this year, while the EU-wide average is 110. This puts Poland in the group of countries with the weakest results in terms of innovation throughout the Community.
The leaders of innovation in the EU are the Nordic countries, with Denmark in the lead. Denmark's success is attributed, among others, to advanced innovation sales gross and crucial investments in ICT skills development. Another group is "strong innovators", among which are the main continental economies specified as France, Germany and the Benelux countries. The countries of confederate Europe, specified as Italy and Spain, are referred to as "moderate innovators". Most countries of Central and east Europe, including Poland, belong to the group of "innovators entering", indicating an expanding but inactive insufficient innovation potential. However, exceptions are Estonia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic, which have been promoted to the category of "moderate innovators".
European Innovation Ranking 2023
In the cyclical ranking of the European Commission, the European Innovation Ranking (edition 2023), Poland scored 68.1 points, which was the 4th worst consequence among EU countries and the tenth of all countries surveyed. The largest innovator was Switzerland, which scored 151,4 points. Poland took the same place in 2022.
Development Traps
In a conversation with Kresy.pl portal Dr. Cezary Mech, economist and erstwhile Deputy Minister of Finance, he pointed out that bringing immigrants to Poland is simply a short-wave activity which in the long word can lead to a halt to technological development. Mech noted the phenomenon of the alleged mid-development trap.
"The trap of medium-term improvement is that various countries, trying to catch up with high-developed countries, apply an economical policy adapted to large corporations, accomplish a certain level, but do not exceed it anymore," said Mech. According to Dr. Cezary Mech, in addition to the mediate improvement trap, there is besides a "diffusion trap" in Poland. Both are hampering the improvement of fresh technologies and hampering wage increases.

The Innovation Scoreboard report, published annually by the European Commission, is 1 of the most crucial sources of information on the state of innovation in the EU.
