PKP Cargo announces another wave of group layoffs. In the next 2 years, up to 2.4 1000 people may lose their jobs. This is another restructuring phase to save the company from collapse.

Next occupation cuts at the Cargo Railway Station

In a communication published on 6 June 2025, the PKP Cargo announced its intention to carry out group redundancies, which would include:

  • up to 1041 employees in 2025,
  • up to 1388 employees in 2026.

The process is to be completed by 30 September 2026., with exemptions scheduled for 2025 to be made by the end of July at the latest.

"The board of directors, despite the corrective and restructuring measures already implemented in the area of employment, requires further steps. The initiated process is an crucial part of the Restructuring Plan" – reads the statement.

PKP Cargo in crisis. Fatal Financial Results

The decision on further redundancies was made shortly after the erstwhile simplification in employment. At the end of 2024, the Cargo Railway Station said goodbye 3665 employeesincluding:

  • 2515 people under collective redundancies,
  • 1150 employees for reasons another than restructuring.

In 2023 the company was employed 14,000 peopleand throughout the group Okay. 20,000.

The financial condition of PKP Cargo leaves a lot to be desired:

Will restructuring save PKP Cargo?

Current management declares that exemptions are essential to reconstruct the company's competitiveness.

"We are in the process of carrying out restructuring activities that will lead to profitability and profits for PKP Cargo over the longer term" – said Michał Latvian, associate of the Financial Board.

The company besides announces investments in new rolling stock and improvement of intermodal transport, among others, in corridors Baltic-Adriatic and routes to Hamburg and Rotterdam.

What about the employees?

PKP Cargo launches consultations with trade unions. Details of the Restructuring Plan are to be presented by the end of June 2025.
