From March 1, 2025 Pensioners in Poland will receive higher benefits. Valorisation of pensions has been established at 5.5%which means the lowest pension will increase by PLN 97.95 gross. But real increases can disappoint many. The first government announcements indicated that the value of at least 6.88%which would give higher amounts. Will seniors lose on this year's valorization? These are detailed calculations.

How much will pension value be in 2025?

Why is valorisation lower than expected?

The government's preliminary projections suggested valorisation at the level 6.78%which would give a minimum pension of PLN 1 901.71 gross. Why, then, a lower rate? The reason is the final inflation rate and real wage increases for 2024.

Valorisation rate is determined on the basis of 2 factors:

  1. Average yearly index of consumer goods and services for pensionerswhich was 3.6%.
  2. Real increase in average wage in 2024which was 9.5%.

The final value of valorization is 5.5%, which means lower benefits than previously anticipated.

Is valorisation adequate for rising prices?

Although pension increases are intended to compensate for the increase in the cost of living, many seniors fear that they will not cover the real increase in spending. The cost of surviving in Poland continues to increase – according to forecasts energy, medicines and food prices in 2025 may be higher even by 7-10% compared to the erstwhile year. Will the pension increase of 5.5% be sufficient?

According to experts, valorisation is not following the real inflation experienced by seniors, in peculiar in terms of basic expenditure specified as:

  • food (+8% y/y),
  • medicines and healthcare (+100 % y/y),
  • energy and heating (+12 % y/y).

Additionally, in March 2025 there will be no second valorisation or 14th retirement, which means even more financial difficulties for many people.

What are the alternatives to pensioners?

Experts indicate that in the current situation pensioners should search additional sources of income or benefit from reductions and discountswhich may partially offset the effects of rising prices. Note:

  • housing and energy allowances – available to the poorest seniors,
  • discounts on public communications and medicines – many cities offer free transport for 70+ people,
  • Covering programs for seniors – financial support for people with the lowest income.

Summary: Pensioners will get little than expected

  • Valorisation of pensions in 2025 5.5%, which means expanding the minimum pension to PLN 1 878.91 gross.
  • Initially, the government forecasted a higher valorisation rate (6.78%), but the final economical data forced its reduction.
  • The increase in benefits will not cover real price increases, especially energy, medicines and food.
