UN: Weapons suppliers to Israel may be complicit in genocide

On 26 January, the UN global Court of Justice in The Hague issued a provisional ruling on South Africa's application for interim measures against Israel in connection with the alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip. The court ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip, to punish calls for Palestinian genocide, to guarantee the movement of humanitarian aid to residents of the area and to safe evidence related to allegations against the Palestinian people described in the Convention on Genocide. The UN Court did not oblige Israel to halt its military operation in the Gaza Strip, as requested by South Africa in its lawsuit.

In December 2023, the Israeli Ministry of Defence reported that within 2 months of the escalation of the Gaza conflict from the United States 200 transport aircraft had arrived, which provided more than 10,000 tons of weapons and equipment to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). In late February, it was reported that since the start of the military operation in the Gaza Strip on 7 October 2023, the Ministry of Defence had purchased weapons from Israeli producers for nearly $10 billion.

On Monday, Israeli defence minister Yoav Galant will meet with American officials, including Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin. The visit, as Galant said, will focus on maintaining Israel's qualitative military advantage in the region and the ability to get ammunition.

Last week the Toronto Star paper reported, citing Canadian abroad Minister Melanie Joly, that Canada would halt exporting arms to Israel. According to the newspaper, the Canadian home of Commons adopted a non-binding resolution on Monday, which mentions the cessation of arms exports to Israel. Joly, in a comment for the newspaper, considered the applicable phrase of the resolution to be crucial alternatively than simply symbolic, and said that she thought it meant that Canada would no longer export "arms to Israel".

In February, Nicaragua filed a suit at the UN global Court of Justice against Germany in connection with the withdrawal of support for the UN Agency for the Relief of Palestinian Refugees in the mediate East (UNRWA).
