Many seniors in Poland may not realize that, despite reaching retirement age, they are not automatically exempt from paying the radio-television subscription (RTV). Due to the applicable rules, negligence of this work may consequence in severe consequences, including the seizure of part of the pension by the taxation Office. Find out who can actually number on the RTV subscription waiver and how to avoid possible problems.
Current RTV subscription rates in 2024
Before moving on to the details of the exemptions, it is worth recalling the current RTV subscription rates in 2024. They shall be:
- 8.70 PLN per period for radio receiver
- 27.30 zł per period for tv or radio set
These fees are compulsory for all who registered the RTV receiver, regardless of age or social status. The absence of regular payments may lead to the payment of receivables by the taxation Office, which frequently ends with the seizure of part of the pension.
Do pensioners gotta pay RTV subscriptions?
Many people, especially seniors, mistakenly believe that reaching retirement age automatically relieves them of paying RTV subscriptions. Nothing more wrong! The provisions in force clearly specify who may be exempted from this obligation. It is worth remembering, however, that even if we fulfil the conditions for dismissal, we must complete the formalities ourselves.
Who's fired from paying the RTV subscription?
The rules supply for respective groups of people who are exempted from the work to pay the RTV subscription. These are:
- Persons over 75 years of age - Automatic release.
- Persons with first disability – proof of disability is required.
- Veterans-invalids – exemption on the basis of appropriate certificates.
- Retirements after the age of 60 whose pension does not exceed 50% of the average wage – exemption is granted after the income criterion is met.
How do I get an RTV subscription waiver?
In order to benefit from the exemption from the licence fee, it is essential to complete the formalities in the nearest Polish Post Office. To this end:
- Make a statement the exemption.
- Provide documents certifying the right to release, specified as identity card, pensioner card or another applicable document.
The licence fee exemption shall enter into force from the first day of the period following the submission of documents.
What about the RTV subscription? Changes planned
The Ministry of Culture is working on amending the RTV licence provisions, which could mean its full abolition and replacement by budget grants. Planned changes can enter into force at the earliest in 2026. Until then, elder citizens must be aware of the rules and rates in force to avoid unpleasant consequences.
Although many people think that retirement age automatically slows down from paying RTV subscription, reality is simply a small more complicated. A registered RTV receiver requires regular fees, and only certain elder groups can number on exemption. It is crucial that elder citizens be aware of their rights and obligations to avoid possible financial problems.
