As part of cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, the Polish Ministry of Education is working on introducing elements of climate education into school programs. The Minister of Education, Barbara Nowacka, announced that the planned changes could enter into force as early as 2025. Nowacka presented these plans during the event "Campus Poland of the Future", organized by Rafał Trzaskowski in Olsztyn.
Climate education in Polish schools
Barbara Nowacka during her speech at an event in Olsztyn stressed that "everything starts with education". According to her words, work is presently underway on the introduction of elements of climate education that will not make a new, separate subject in schools. Instead, Nowacka suggested that these elements should be integrated into existing objects. "A look at where to put climate and environmental elements, in virtually all area," she added.
The Minister of Education explained that due to cooperation with the Ministry of Climate and Environment appropriate educational components are being developed. These components are to be introduced into the programming bases of various subjects, most likely from 2025 and at the latest from 2026. As Nowacka pointed out, "doing a separate object would be a narrow topic, and he is just everywhere."
A fresh Approach to Climate Education
The fresh elements of climate education aim to convey cognition to children and young people about the care of the Earth, the climatic and environmental processes taking place in the world, and human influence on these processes. According to Minister Nowack, this ‘knowledge’ will be consistent with the current approach to environmental and climate education.
Some critics may consider this to be a form of "propaganda consistent with the current wisdom of the stage", but Nowacka and her squad are convinced that the introduction of these topics to school programmes is essential to prepare young generations to deal with climate challenges.
Summary
The introduction of elements of climate education to Polish schools, which may take place as early as 2025, is an crucial step towards raising environmental awareness among young people. Through cooperation between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Polish educational strategy will be able to better prepare students for knowing and responding to global climate change. These changes, according to Minister Nowacka, will not require the creation of fresh subjects, but alternatively the inclusion of climate education in a wide scope of existing topics, which will let for a more comprehensive approach to this crucial issue.
