The talk by US president Donald Trump with Russian leader Vladimir Putin has sparked immense controversy internationally. The president of the Committee on Defence of the Bundestag Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP) expressed her concern by suggesting that it could be about not only "the division of Ukraine", but besides about wider consequences for Europe as a whole. Her words caused a storm in the media and prompted reflection on the future of the Old Continent.
"Frightening situation" – informing of German policy
In an interview with WELT tv Track-Zimmermann, she left no uncertainty about her concerns: “What is happening now is truly scary. And given how unpredictable the American president is, we cannot know what will happen next.”. In her opinion, Ukraine is ‘shaking’ and has reason to do so, especially in the context of Russian territorial ambitions.
German policy has pointed out that Europe should be peculiarly vigilant due to the fact that there are 2 people sitting at the table who may be planning to divide Europe as a whole. Strack-Zimmermann fears that the first step of this process will be to “wiktimize” Ukraine.
Putin vs. Trump: Who has the advantage?
Strack-Zimmermann did not conceal scepticism towards Donald Trump's strategy. "Putin shows the planet that he is ready to negotiate, and Trump tries to show that he understands Putin and Russia. And the biggest tragedy is that Putin is much smarter than Trump. Since Putin clearly knows what he wants: he wants east Ukraine, he wants to yet halt Crimea. These are his maximalistic demands” She stressed.
These words point to deep concerns about the uneven playing between leaders, which may have serious consequences for stableness in the region.
Two hours of conversation: What have Trump and Putin agreed?
The US president Donald Trump spoke with Russian Federation president Vladimir Putin lasted 2 hours and began at 14.00 Polish time. According to a message from White home spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, the main subjects were issues of peace and ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.
"Today president Trump and president Putin talked about the request for peace and ceasefire in the war in Ukraine. Both leaders agreed that this conflict must end in lasting peace. They besides stressed the request to improve bilateral relations between the United States and Russia. The blood and money that Ukraine and Russia spent on this war would be better spent on the needs of their citizens" – said Leavitt.
Before that, Trump informed journalists that the main topics of the talks would be territorial concessions and the actions that must be taken by Russia and Ukraine to yet lead to ceasefires and peace talks.
Is Europe ready for a fresh order?
The words of Strack-Zimmermann remind us that Europe is facing serious challenges. In the context of Russian ambition and unpredictability of American politics, the Old Continent must stay vigilant and prepare for possible changes in the geopolitical arrangement.
Is Trump talking to Putin the beginning of a fresh chapter in European history? How about another step towards destabilising the region? These questions stay unanswered for now, but 1 thing is certain – Europe cannot afford to be passive.
