Luis Antonio Tagle was born on June 21, 1957 in Manila. His maternal grandma came from a wealthy Chinese immigrant family. As a child, the cardinal was nicknamed fondly “Chito”. He studied at San José Seminary and then studied at Ateneo de Manila University, where he earned his master's degree in fine arts. In 1982, he was ordained a priest. He rapidly became a lecturer in the local seminary and then assumed the function of rector.
Luis Antonio Tagle studied in the United States, where he defended his doctorate. In 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Imus and Archbishop of Manila in 2011. A year later Benedict XVI appointed him Cardinal. In 2015, Tagle took over as president of Caritas Internationalis, which he served until 2022. In 2020, Francis elevated the Filipino to the rank of cardinal bishop, suggesting that Tagle was at the time a favourite erstwhile it came to the strategy of the pope. In 2022, the Cardinal became a pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization.
This is not the first time Luis Antonio Tagle has been selected as the future pope. In 2013, just after Benedict XVI's resignation, the media claimed that it was Filipino who had the best chance of taking the lead in the Catholic Church. Eventually, the conclave decided that it would be from Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who accepted the name Francis.
According to data from the Congregation for Bishops, in 2022 there were 5,364 bishops worldwide, of which 114 were cardinals. Among them is Luis Antonio Tagle, who has a chance to become a fresh pope.
