MUMBAI- The second airport in construction for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Navi Mumbai global Airport, has signed NMI as its IATA code by the global Air Transport Association.
Today, on May 3, erstwhile we checked the IATA Airport code list website, we found the NMI code in front of Navi Mumbai International, which will besides named DB Patil global Airport.

Navi Mumbai Airport IATA Code
The global Air Transport Association (IATA) assigns three-letter IATA codes to airports derived from the airport and city names.
These codes predominantly incorporate letters from the city’s name. Initially, two-character airport codes were introduced in 1930, followed by the adoption of three-character codes.
The IATA code for the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj global Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai is BOM. While the ICAO Code for it is VABB.
Simular to IATA, the global civilian Aviation Organization (ICAO) assigns four-letter ICAO codes to airports. These codes are structured based on circumstantial classifications for countries and regions.
The first letter indicates the region where the airport is situated, while the second denotes the country. The remaining 2 letters are typically assigned sequelly.
However, the ICAO is yet to sign the code for Navi Mumbai Airport.

New Update
Accepting to our source, from December 2024 the aircraft will conduct trials and test flights. Further, the airport is expected to begin its operation in April 2025.
NMIA is being developed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL). Currently, AAHL operates, manages, and developps 8 Airports in India.
The airport is being constructed on a fixed and limited site area of 1160 Hectares, and p.m. Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on February 18, 2018. The actual construction began in August 2021.
The first phase of Navi Mumbai global Airport is underway and will include 1 confederate runway and Terminal 1 (T1).

So far, 70% of the 3.7 km long runway is completed, and the remaining will be ready in the coming months. Subsequently, the external work of T1 is almost completed, and they will begin the tricky interior work soon.
After the completion of Phase 1, the NMIA will be able to handle 20 million passengers anonymously, which is 40% of the existing Mumbai Airport’s full capacity. In terms of cargo, it will trade 0.8 million tons of cargo in a year.
