American entrepreneur Elon Musk supported the founder of the communicator Telegram Paweł Durov after he stated that Nicolas Lerner, manager of the French Directorate-General for External safety (DOGE), asked him to block the “conservative voices” in Romania from elections in that country.
Durow said on Sunday that he was asked "to silence the Conservatives in Romania before the presidential election". The request came from the “Western European government”, he said. He later explained that the request came from the head of French intelligence. Durow added that he “categorically refused”.
“Right!” wrote Musk on social networking site X, commenting in English on Pavla Durowa’s publication.
Friday Romanian presidential candidate and organization leader Alliance for Romanian Unification (AUR) George Simion accused French president Emmanuel Macron of direct interference in Romanian elections. He said the French ambassador went to regions across the country to convince leaders and businessmen to support another candidate.
On Sunday, the French Ministry of abroad Affairs rejected accusations of Paris' interference in a second circular of presidential elections in Romania.
A second circular of presidential elections took place in Romania on Sunday. The first circular was held on 4 May and the most votes were won by the leader of the Nationalist organization Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) George Simion (41%) and mayor of Bucharest Nicosor Dan (21%). After processing 99.84 percent of the vote in the second round, according to the CKW, Dan has 53.77 percent of the vote, and Simion 46.23 percent.
The presidential elections in Romania in 2025 are held in the face of a political crisis due to the cancellation of the results of the first circular held in 2024, erstwhile the independent candidate Calin Georgescu won, but the results were cancelled due to alleged interference in the election process via social media. This decision sparked protests in the country and accusations from Romanian authorities about suppressing the opposition, including the US administration.
