Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been engaged intensively in fresh days in efforts to preserve the unity of the West towards the ongoing war in Ukraine. At the summit of European leaders in London, attended by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French president Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski, Meloni stressed the importance of transatlantic cooperation.
“I think it is very, very crucial that we avoid the hazard of division of the West,” said the Italian Prime Minister, pointing out that any discrepancy in positions weakens common efforts to advance peace.
In particular, she referred to the increasing tensions between Ukraine and the United States following president Zelenski's last gathering with Donald Trump in the White House, which resulted in a severe exchange of opinions and a abrupt interruption of talks.
The London gathering aimed to make a common strategy to further support Ukraine and safeguard European safety interests. Keir Starmer announced, among others, the transportation of 5,000 air defence missiles to Ukraine, as well as considering sending peacekeeping forces in the future. In consequence to these declarations Meloni stressed that “Together we defended Ukraine in those years” and that divisions between allies can only weaken the common position.
In the face of expanding tensions on the Washington-Kiy line, the Italian Prime Minister proposed an urgent global summit to bring together representatives of the United States, European countries and their allies. The aim of the gathering would be to establish a common policy towards Ukraine and to effort to reconstruct common trust following controversy over American abroad policy.
“The United States, Europe, NATO and Italy have the same objective: to accomplish fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. No 1 can afford a peace that will not last, due to the fact that it would be fatal for everyone, especially for Ukraine," said Meloni, pointing out the request for the long-term commitment of the West to stabilising the region.
During the London Meloni Summit, she besides met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with whom she discussed ways to strengthen cooperation for peace in Europe and strengthen transatlantic relations.
"Italy and the United Kingdom can play a key function in building bridges between Europe and the United States", said the Prime Minister, stressing that strategical partnership is essential in the face of global challenges.
The actions of Giorgia Meloni form part of a broader context of European efforts to further support Ukraine and prevent escalation of the conflict. In the coming weeks, further meetings of EU leaders are planned, and a peculiar European Council session in Brussels is intended to discuss further steps on military and political assistance for Kiev.
