Prime Minister Donald Tusk and president Emmanuel Macron will meet on 9 May in Nancy to sign a fresh treaty on relationship and cooperation between Poland and France. The agreement will replace the erstwhile paper of the 1990s and will strengthen relations between both countries in key areas specified as defence and energy.
Nancy – Symbolic Site for Polish-French Friendship
Nancy, a town in east France, was not chosen by chance. It was there that in 1736 the Polish king Stanislaw Leszczyński settled after exile from his homeland, becoming the Duke of Lorraine. This place is of peculiar importance to the past of both nations.
"Premium Treaty" – What does the fresh Agreement include?
French MFA defines the fresh agreement as ‘premium contract’, stressing that this would be the first specified agreement concluded by France with a country outside its immediate neighbourhood.
– We must bring French-Polish relations to the level where we keep them with key partners in the EU: Italy, Spain and Germany said the French Ambassador to Poland, Étienne de Pontins, in conversation with PAP.
Security and Cooperation – Key Points of the Treaty
Prime Minister Donald Tusk as early as March, he pointed out that the fresh treaty could be crucial for common safety guarantees.
– We are slow finalising the treaty between Poland and France. I hope we're ready to sign it soon. – he spoke after gathering president Macron in Paris.
Head of Polish diplomacy, Radosław Sikorski, expressed hope that work on the paper would be completed quickly.
Why is it important?
The fresh Treaty is not only intended to strengthen political and economical cooperation, but besides to strengthen defence ties, which is peculiarly crucial in the context of the current geopolitical situation.
Will it become past on 9 May 2024 as a day of breakthrough in the relations between Poland and France? Everything points to a yes.
