Romania returned like a boomerang to the EU presidency, winning a majority in the first circular of presidential elections as leader of the Nationalist Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) by George Simion – announced on Monday on its website on the social network X Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing organization National Assembly in the French parliament.
Simion had previously won 41% of the vote in the first circular of the race, which gave him a leadership position.
"Romania has just given (the head of the European Commission – ed.) Mrs von der Leyen a very good boomerang", Le Pen wrote.
On Sunday, the first circular of presidential elections was held in Romania. According to the Central Election Commission, Simion won 41% of the vote and finished first, Mayor Bucharest Nicosor Dan finished second with 21% of the vote, and 3rd took typical of the current ruling coalition Crina Antonescu with 20.1% of the vote.
There were 11 candidates for the position of president of Romania: opposition leader, nationalist organization Alliance for Romanian Unification (AUR) George Simion, independent candidate, mayor of Bucharest Nicosor Dan, candidate of the ruling party, erstwhile Romanian legislature president Crin Antonescu, organization leader of the Romanian Salvation Union (USR) Elena Lasconi, independent candidate, erstwhile Prime Minister Victor Ponta, Romanian National-Conservative leader of the Cristian Terhes Party, associate of the Socialist-Humanist organization Lavinia Şandru, organization leader of Natiunea Romana John-Ion Banu, erstwhile head of Romanian abroad intelligence Silviu Predoiu, erstwhile Minister of Education Daniel Funeriu and organization leader of the fresh Romania Sebastian Popescu.
Under Romanian law, the winner of the presidential election is simply a candidate who will receive more than half the vote of voters included in the lists. If the vote is little than 50%, there will be a second circular of elections in 2 weeks, in which the winner will be the 1 who gets the average majority.
The second circular of presidential elections in Romania is scheduled for 18 May.
