We are followed by another alleged Grand Final of the large Orchestra of Christmas Charity. On this occasion, it is worth considering whether it truly is simply a "holiness of charity", how the WEDS works and who benefits from it.
For more than 3 decades now, the WOŚP has been appearing in the Polish discourse as the largest charity action in the country, collecting tens of millions of PLN per year for medical equipment. For many, however, this is simply a “sacrifice of social solidarity”, but there have long been serious criticisms that point to unclear financial mechanisms, possible conflicts of interest and insufficient transparency.
Publicist Rafał Ziemkiewicz in its latest analysis calls the WOŚP “aberration that pretends to be sacred”. In his opinion, the organization is becoming more and more like a business and organization venture, selling the “feel of cool” to donors alternatively of focusing solely on real aid to those in need. Ziemkiewicz reaches to the nowhere non-originating historical association, claiming that the only “first example” of WŚP is Nazi Winter Action from the 1930s, which is expected to emphasize the propaganda and mass nature of the collection.
Companies associated with Owsiak and financial controversy
Critics of Oatsiak have repeatedly raised the subject of WOŚP's links with economical operators to which funds from collection are to flow. The most publicized accusations about companies ‘Ark Whole’ and ‘Golden Melon’. According to part of the media and commentators "The Ant All" was to operate in conjunction with the WEDP, carry out productions and sales of materials, and then be dissolved in connection with court proceedings, followed by a fresh entity – ‘Sure’.
These allegations included buying advertising services, musical works or gadgets from themselves, which, according to critics, creates a conflict of interest and leads to the cost of the foundation for companies closely associated with Jerzy Owsiak and his household (wife and future son-in-law).
Court trials with parent Kurka and criticism limits
One of the best-known disputes around the WOŚP was the trial of Jerzy Owsiak with a blogger known as “Mother Kurka” (Piotr Wielgucki), who in a series of texts charged embezzlements, financial frauds, and “the extraction of gold melons” from collections.
The court in Złotorya in 2014 acquitted the blogger of most allegations of financial irregularities, considering any of his assessments as admissible within the framework of free speech, although he convicted him of utilizing offensive epithets at Owsiak. However, the court did not confirm that ‘Golden Melon’ was always owned by Owsiak privatelyOnly that it is an entity set up by the WOŚP Foundation.
Transparency, media communicative and public responsibility
One of the key allegations against WOŚP is the alleged reluctance to full disclose accounts and detailed financial accounts, making it hard to verify the flow of funds between the foundation and related companies. Financial transparency should be a precedence for specified a large-scale charity, and any gap in the availability of specified data reinforces social scepticism.
It is worth noting that WOŚP defended itself against the waves of criticism, identifying them as “hate” and “talk of hate” and taking legal action alternatively of simply revealing invoices. At the same time, public debate on this subject frequently falls to the level of common accusations in a political context, making it hard to measure in a factual manner the function and relevance of substantive allegations.
Political engagement and worldview – foundation or ideological movement?
Another origin of controversy around the WOŚP is the clear engagement of Jerzy Owsiak in current political and worldview disputes. Oatsiak publically declared his sympathy for Donald Tusk's camp many times, appeared on demonstrations organized by opposition to the regulation of the Law and spoke in social campaigns which are clearly political in nature. In the eyes of critics, this undermines the image of WOŚP as a "overly-partyed" citizens' initiative and raises the question of whether mass public collections are at the same time a tool for building ideological backgrounds.
Equally strong emotions are triggered by the consistent promotion by Oatsiak of customs demands characteristic of utmost left-wing streams: support for liberalisation of abortion law, active support for feminist movements and affirmation of sodomites' postulates in the space of events linked to the WODP brand and Pol’and’Rock festival.
Critics point out that combining kid collection with specified a world-view message puts donors in an uncomfortable position – any of the population may want to advance wellness care without identifying themselves with the alleged "progressive" cultural agenda.
From this point of view, the WOŚP ceases to be a purely charitable foundation and begins to function as a broad social-political movement, utilizing immense emotional and media capital to legitimize a peculiar direction of cultural change. For opponents of specified a model, this is contrary to the thought of neutrality of charities and leads to a situation where criticism of the foundation is automatically identified with hostility towards charity aid as such.
Summary
Criticism of WŚP and Jerzy Owsiak's activities is mixed with 3 main themes: doubts about financial mechanisms and links with private companies, controversy around the boundaries of public criticism (processes with bloggers) and concerns about transparency and media narrative. Even if any of the charges have not been confirmed, their repetition and emotional charge affect the image of the organization in public space. Both effective social assistance and an open debate on how and by whom specified assistance is implemented are crucial in a democratic society.
