During the Way of the Cross in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska on Good Friday, the metropolitan of Kraków Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski gave a homily which echoed widely in public space. In his speech, the clergy not only referred to Christ's torment, but besides pointed to contemporary social and moral problems, which, in his opinion, constitute a court of law over Poland.
“Now there is simply a court over Poland. The main persecuted and most threatened is present a small, innocent and defenseless kid who is killed by a fatal blow to his heart. They are virtually and figuratively killed," said the archbishop.
The 3 attitudes towards Christ – the actuality of evangelical patterns
In his homily, the archbishop distinguished 3 groups of people who symbolized the attitude taken towards the Savior – and he emphasized – besides present they can be found in society:
- High Priests and Sanhedrin – full of hatred, incapable to accept the fact about Jesus' divine origin.
- Crowd – susceptible to manipulation, demanding utmost solutions, without the ability to reflect independently.
- Pilate – a compromise man for whom the fact was subject to political and social interests of peace.
“The Pilate was so efficient and smart a justice that he rapidly came to the conclusion that Jesus was innocent and that “the advanced priests betrayed him by envy,” the archbishop pointed out.
World Court and Poland – spiritual References to Modernity
Archbishop Jędraszewski referred to the words from the Gospel of St John: “Now there is simply a judgement on this world”, highlighting their timeless validity. According to him, it is possible to talk about court present – both over the planet and over Poland. This court concerns the values that we profess as a society, and how we treat the weakest – especially unborn children.
“State authorities liable for justice in our homeland are silent,” he said, recalling the case of a boy named Felek, killed in the womb during the ninth period of pregnancy.
The clergyman powerfully criticized the activities of the media, political circles and institutions that he felt supported the "abortion industry". He besides talked about symbolic forms of hitting children through educational programs and limiting religion in schools.
“The Polish kid besides tries to kill figuratively, hitting his innocent heart and mind,” said the archbishop.
Modern Incarnations of advanced Priests, Crowds and Pilate
The Archbishop besides pointed to the contemporary equivalents of the Gospel characters:
- Modern advanced Priests – political forces, foundations and organisations that, as he said, "play the tragic problem of abortion for their highly low purposes".
- Crowd – Society prone to manipulation and media narratives.
- The Modern Pilates – public people and decision-makers who “hand-to-hand” and avoid moral responsibility.
“There are no shortages of conformists and cowards who, after Pilate, repeat: “I am not guilty of the blood of the righteous one. This is your thing,” he quoted in Matthew 27, 24b.
Cross as a criterion of fact and love
At the end of his deliberations, the Kraków metropolitan pointed out that the actual criterion of judgement over man and the planet is the Cross of Jesus Christ – a sign of the top love and truth.
“Now there is simply a judgement on this world. Now there is simply a court over Poland. Now there's a court of law over us. The criterion of this judgement is the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ – a sign of the top and most touching love for each and all 1 of us," concluded Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski.
