ROME- A critical technical malfunction forced a Jet2 (LS) flight to make an emergency landing at London Stansted Airport (STN) today (January 20, 2025), disrupting travel plans for passengers headed to Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) in Rome.

A British low-cost carrier, Jet2 operates two weekly flights between Glasgow, Scotland and Rome, Italy.

Jet2 Emergency Landing

Flight LS135, an over 16-year-old Boeing 737-800 aircraft, registered as G-JZBV departed Glasgow Airport (GLA) at 7:07 AM but encountered serious fuel gauge irregularities approximately 90 minutes into its journey.

The flight crew activated a 7700 squawk signal, the international code for emergency situations, while flying over Paris.

The pilots immediately executed a U-turn and diverted to London Stansted Airport, touching down safely at approximately 9:00 AM. Emergency response teams inspected the aircraft upon landing, finding no evidence of fuel leakage despite the concerning instrument readings.

A passenger aboard the grounded aircraft revealed that the emergency stemmed from fuel gauge readings indicating significantly lower levels than anticipated for that stage of the flight. The aircraft remained on the runway while Jet2 implemented contingency measures.

The airline’s swift response included arrangements for an alternative aircraft at Stansted to continue the journey to Rome.

Jet2 communicated directly with affected passengers via text message, acknowledging the operational disruption and assuring them of efforts to resume their travel as quickly as possible.

Similar Incidents

A United Airlines (UA) flight executing a transatlantic journey from London Heathrow to Newark Liberty International Airport executed an emergency return to London on November 9, 2024, marking another significant aviation incident involving suspected fuel system issues.

Flight UA17, operating on the carrier’s regular London-Newark route, initiated emergency protocols mid-flight, prompting an immediate return to its departure point. Social media reports from X platform users indicate a suspected fuel leak triggered the emergency response, though United Airlines has not yet confirmed the specific nature of the technical issue.

This incident adds to a growing pattern of fuel-related emergencies in commercial aviation. A Garuda Indonesia (GA) Boeing 737 aborted its takeoff at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in August 2024 after ground crews detected an active fuel leak. The swift response prevented potential complications during flight.

In a similar occurrence from the previous year, an American Airlines (AA) Boeing 737 conducting flight operations between Chicago O’Hare and LaGuardia airports diverted to Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport. The crew executed an emergency landing after identifying an active fuel leak during the flight.
