Ireland: A Protestant teacher has spent a year in prison. All by refusing to usage “preliminaries”

A full of over 400 days he spent in prisons in various periods and places in Ireland Enoch Burke – an evangelical teacher from 1 of the schools there for not wanting to usage the language “sexually neutral” towards 1 of his students. The arrest warrant was issued by justice Alexander Owens, but Burke sued him to a higher court. During the proceeding in the ultimate Court, justice Michael Quinn ruled that the evidence provided indicated that the teacher had broken the terms of the court sentence. He ordered Burke to be put in prison in Mountjoy, at the same time reserving that the teacher could go free if he applied the warrant before the next court appeal, scheduled for October 11. The Court of First Instance besides stressed that Burke’s continued presence at school caused alleged distortions in his activities and tensions between teachers and students.

However, the teacher remained firm in his convictions, indicating that his imprisonment was due to his rejection of the "hell ideology of transgenderism". In his view, the essence of the conflict lies in his position towards school guidelines ordering the usage of a pronoun neutral for a male student. Burke indicated that the school rejected his spiritual rights as an evangelical.

The man besides pointed out that court proceedings violated the legal principles. At the same time, however, Burke boldly noted that the “truth of the resurrection” and that he would come to answer to God for his deeds. His family, present at the trial, besides criticised the court ruling, and its members demanded that the study of Niamh McShane's erstwhile school chief be brought to light, showing the actual essence of the case. However, the justice reiterated that he was tasked not to consider ideological aspects of the conflict, but to measure whether Burke was following a warrant issued by justice Owens. In spite of the 2 erstwhile prison sentences and the imposition on Protestant teacher, this fine continued to appear at school, which allegedly “forced the directorate of the facility to request fresh legal remedies against him”.

According to the school authorities, school attendance gave birth to “anxiety among staff” and was “harmful” to the school environment. Burke, meanwhile, remains officially employed at the facility and remains on the payroll.

Burke continues to argue judicial decisions, defending his right to come to school and claiming that he will not abandon his disciples. On 11 October this year, the ultimate Court of Ireland is to reconsider the full case.
