The energy supplier Tauron Distribution began intensive control of photovoltaic stations at its customers. In 2023, controllers detected irregularities in all second installation checked, which was a serious problem in the management of the energy network. Now, in 2024, Tauron plans to check as many as 1,600 photovoltaic installations, utilizing modern technologies specified as drones.
Why control photovoltaic installations?
The main intent of the control is to destruct incorrect connections and incorrect operation of photovoltaic microinstallations. Tauron besides wants to prevent the introduction of energy into the network without an appropriate agreement, which could lead to the destabilisation of the full energy system. Thanks to systematic inspections, the company can better manage the network and guarantee its optimal functioning.
Why drones?
Using drones to control photovoltaic installations brings many benefits:
- Accuracy and precision: Drones let precise documentation of the method condition of the installation and fast detection of possible problems.
- Security: Employees do not request to usage ladders and lifts, which importantly increases their safety.
- Efficiency: Drones accelerate the control process, allowing more installations to be checked in a shorter time.
Flights over private property and companies
Controls utilizing drones are carried out in all 11 branches of the company. Each contractor liable for micro-installation checks shall be equipped with drones. Drone flights over private property and companies shall be carried out in accordance with the laws and operators shall have the appropriate rights.
What does the control procedure look like?
The checks shall be carried out on the basis of measurement data from distant reading meters. If the power of installed photovoltaic panels is consistent with the notification and the inverter settings are correct, the control will not be. Otherwise, the drone makes a flight over the roof of the property, photographing photovoltaic panels, and the control results are analysed.
After all the activities have been carried out, the Tauron staff shall inform the result of the inspection and forward a copy of the control protocol. If irregularities are confirmed, the company will take further legal steps, which may consequence in penalties being imposed.
Cases of irregularities
In 2023, in utmost case, 4 times as many installed photovoltaic panels were revealed as reported. For example, 1 prosumer installed 117 panels, while the contract assumed 30. specified irregularities can lead to serious problems in the energy network, and Tauron is intensifying its controls.
Information to customers
Tauron ensures that customers are previously informed of the planned control. Inspections are preceded by sending letters to customers who have observed irregularities. In specified letters, customers shall be informed of the anticipation of updating data in micro-installation reports or ordering the installer to check the safety value settings on the inverter.
The checks on photovoltaic installations carried out by Tauron utilizing drones are essential to guarantee the stableness and safety of the energy network.
