Poles are affected by the increase in electricity prices, which has been introduced since July 2024. Despite fresh regulations protecting consumers, any households were amazed by higher electricity bills. If you have a suspicion that you have received an overcharge, see what you can do to correct it. Minister for Climate and Environment, Paulina Hennig-Kloska, explains how to solve this problem.

Increase in electricity prices in Poland

From July 1, 2024 fresh mechanisms were introduced to defend Polish consumers from rising electricity prices. Under the fresh regulations, the price of electricity to households is PLN 500 per MWh net, regardless of consumption. For comparison, by the end of June farms paid PLN 412 per MWh net up to a certain consumption limit and after it was exceeded, the price increased to PLN 693 for MWh.

The fresh regulations aimed at stabilising energy costs, but any people noticed increases in their accounts. The increase in the energy price from PLN 412 to PLN 500 per MWh is estimated to increase the monthly account by about PLN 14.5. In addition, there are additional distribution fees that have increased with PLN 289 to PLN 430 for MWhwhich translates into another PLN 23,5 per month. For an average household this means an increase in the bill by about PLN 33 per month.

Suspended power levy

One affirmative aspect of change is abolition of the power levy in the amount of PLN 10.64 net per month. Under the fresh rules, households are exempt from this charge, which brings savings, albeit tiny compared to the overall price increases.

What to do erstwhile the electricity bill is higher than PLN 500 for MWh?

Some people received higher bills due to the fact that before the introduction of fresh regulations, electricity suppliers sent premium forecasts based on earlier rates. In specified cases, if there is simply a price higher than PLN 500 for MWhThis means that the invoice was issued on the basis of outdated forecasts. In consequence to rising energy costs, the government introduced energy voucher for low income households. It can be requested from 1 August to 30 September 2024. The amount of the voucher depends on the number of people in the household and may be 300 zł to 1200 zł. Persons utilizing electrical heating may receive double voucher amount.

  • 300 zł for single-person holdings
  • PLN 400 for doubles
  • PLN 500 for 3 persons
  • 600 zł for 4 and 5 persons
  • For larger farms, over six people, the voucher is 600 złfor those with electrical heating up to PLN 1200.

The voucher shall be awarded after gathering certain income criteria: to PLN 2500 per month for a single holding and for 1700 PLN per person for multi-person holdings. Note that if the income criterion is exceeded, the coupon will be reduced proportionally.

Energy prices in 2025 – what next?

In 2025, electricity prices can change further. The Ministry of Finance talks with climate resorts and manufacture to guarantee that energy prices are at an acceptable level.
