On TVN24, the “ Period over i” program had a lively discussion between Dariusz Joński (KO) and Kazimierz Smoliński (PiS) about the duties imposed by Donald Trump. The PiS MP stated that the decision of the American president was “understandable from the American point of view”. Dariusz Joński questioned the legitimacy of this decision and explained the economical consequences for Poland and Europe.
During the discussion, Kazimierz Smolinski stated that Donald Trump did not want to talk to the Polish government. "Donald Trump doesn't want to talk to you at all, so possibly only future presidents talk," he said. Dariusz Joński replied that Karol Nawrocki, whom Smolinski was talking about, is not the right individual to talk to Trump. "Even in view of the logic that the PiS MP pointed out a minute ago that individual had imposed duties, so he too, let us now consider islands where only penguins live. Did the penguins impose duties on Trump? Nope. Only that penguins may not realize what happened, but it seemed that PiS politicians should realize what was happening," said Joński.
Dariusz Joński explained that the import duties imposed by Donald Trump may have a negative impact on the European economy. "What we produce in Europe and send to the States will be more costly by 20 percent and cars by 25 percent. Where will this end? That Americans will buy little due to the fact that they will be more costly with these products. If they buy less, we will produce little here in Europe. We will gotta slow down and there will be a recession," Janski warned.
Kazimierz Smolinski stressed that "if the Chinese have higher duties than we do, that does not mean that we must lose on this". "And don't talk about penguins here," said PiS MP. Dariusz Joński replied that "I am trying to explain to you like penguins, due to the fact that if you do not realize what customs mean and increase customs duties, then I gotta explain to you, due to the fact that otherwise?"
During the discussion Dariusz Joński asked Kazimierz Smoliński, "Why the president of Poland does not talk to Trump erstwhile he has specified good relations". Smolinski replied that "he had an 8-minute meeting". This discussion shows how crucial global and economical relations are for Poland and Europe.
According to GUS data, in 2020 Poland's exports to the United States amounted to $14.6 billion, which represented 3.5% of Poland's full exports. On the another hand, imports from the US amounted to $12.3 billion, representing 2.9% of full Polish imports. These data show how windy the trade relations between Poland and the United States are.
It is worth recalling that the European Union is 1 of the largest trading partners of the United States. According to the European Commission, in 2020 EU exports to the US amounted to EUR 384 billion, representing 17.6% of full EU exports. In turn, imports from the US amounted to EUR 223 billion, representing 11.4% of full EU imports.
The discussion in the programme " Period over i" shows how crucial global and economical relations are in the case of Poland and Europe. The import duties imposed by Donald Trump may have a negative impact on the European economy and so Poland and the EU should act actively to defend their economical interests.
