– We do not want to be (longer) part of a politicized institution that has lost its impartiality and credibility – said Peter Szijjarto, head of the Hungarian Ministry of abroad Affairs. The Hungarian Parliament voted to leave the global Criminal Court.
On 29 April, the Hungarian Parliament decided to leave the global Criminal Court (ICC). The Hungarian Government must now make an authoritative request to the UN and, after a year, Hungary will formally retreat from the ICC.
– We make this decision due to the fact that we do not want to be (longer) part of a politicized institution that has lost its impartiality and credibility – said the head of the Hungarian MFA Peter Szijjarto.
Viktor Orban's government announced leaving the ICC as early as April during a visit to Hungary to a close ally of Orban – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanjah. Israeli politicians are being prosecuted by the ICC for committing war crimes during the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In the second half of April, the ICC lifted this order – as well as an arrest warrant for erstwhile Israeli defence minister Joawa Galanta – until the hearings were completed.
Although Hungary is simply a associate of the ICC, they have never declared the alleged Roman Status, declaring it incompatible with the Hungarian constitution. The Hungarian authorities so stated that, in the case of a visit to Hungary pursued by ICC Vladimir Putin, he would not have been arrested.
