Wieni wanted to celebrate in a unique way the memory of St. John Paul II. In the 20th year of death, at 9:37 p.m., they illuminated the cross on Gievanta. However, the Tatra National Park guards found that the action was illegal and punished with advanced mandates.
As many as 500 PLN of penalties will should be paid by people active in the action of illumination of the cross on Giewont. This is how the faithful decided to celebrate the memory of St. John Paul II. The item of the cross was scheduled for April 2. The cross was illuminated on time at 9:37 p.m. – at the time of departure of the pope from Poland.
It is worth noting that the action to commemorate Pope John Paul II in this way already has its long-standing tradition and was started in 2005. However, the Guardians of the Tatra National Park do not pass indifferently on this form of honoring the pope. Unfortunately, those who undertake this action impose fines. This time, each of the "perps" received a punishment of PLN 500.
The management of the Tatra National Park remains firm and indicates that the action is illegal. Regulations do not let to travel on trails after dark. In the period from 1 March to 30 November, it is strictly prohibited and is valid on all trails located in the park.
“They were punished for moving along the way after dark, that is, against park regulations. At the top of the Giewont they lit the cross with battery lamps. They were detained in the Giewont massif area. another people who headed for the summit of Giewont before dark were informed that they should return downstairs. Many of them did turn back, but these 2 people ignored the ban and were punished" - explained Andrzej Krzeptowski, the chief of police in an interview with PAP.
