Garbage scandal in Warsaw: Morawiecki urges Trzaskowski to explain

Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki requests the president of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, to explain the alleged garbage scandal. The PiS politician accuses the capital authorities of concealing the fact and failing to respond to corruption.

Morawiecki do Trzaskowski: “It’s time to explain”

In consequence to Rafał Trzaskowski's appeal that candidates for president of the Republic of Poland should be transparent to voters, Mateusz Morawiecki requested the president of Warsaw to explain the garbage scandal.

"Mr Trzaskowski, are you going to explain yourself to the Warsaw garbage scandal? After all, a minute ago on Radio Zet, you yourself called for candidates for the office of president of the Republic of Poland not to hide anything from voters.” – wrote the erstwhile Prime Minister on Twitter.

What do we know about the garbage scandal?

According to media reports, in the years 2020-2022 there was a corruption in Warsaw related to tenders for waste management. Śląsk Faculty of the National Public Prosecutor's Office in Katowice established that the company FB Service passed close 5 million PLN bribes in exchange for value-added contracts PLN 600 million.

He testified in the case, among others. Rafał Trzaskowski, however, the details of his interrogation stay confidential. Morawiecki suggests that the Warsaw authorities could have facilitated the full process.

“Then (maybe) we will find out how the president of Warsaw reacted and whether he reacted at all to corruption going on under his nose” said the erstwhile Prime Minister.

Who's active in the scandal?

According to the D.A.'s office, they were to be involved:

  • Rafał Baniak – erstwhile Deputy Minister of Treasury of the PO-PSL Government,
  • Piotr Karpiński – erstwhile secretary of Warsaw and the MPO exhibition.

Morawiecki emphasizes that despite the passage of time, the prosecution inactive did not mention the indictment to court. He besides accuses the Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar, and the prosecution lacks decisive action.

"Many questions, no answers. I mean, the answers were, Trzaskowski gave them, but they stay covered in mystery. Will we hear them after the election?” – the erstwhile head of government asks rhetorically.

Will Trzaskowski answer the charges?

For now, there is no authoritative consequence from the president of Warsaw. However, the case may affect the election campaign, especially since Trzaskowski is 1 of the main candidates in the race for the office of president of the Republic of Poland.
