Friedrich Merz calls for “independence” from the US after the Germany chadek victory

Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and candidate for the centre-right CDU/CSU block, declared that the precedence of the fresh government would be to strengthen Europe and make it independent of the United States.

His message came after the triumph of the chadeks in the parliamentary elections, held in an atmosphere of increasing concerns about NATO's future and the safety of the continent under Donald Trump in the US.

Merz rejected the anticipation of working with the second electoral force – an alternate for Germany (AfD), which achieved a evidence consequence in the election and won 152 seats in the Bundestag, which accounts for 20.8% of the vote – twice as much as in erstwhile elections in 2021. The winning CDU/CSU block gained 28.6% of support, which translates into 208 seats.

Despite winning, Merz faces the challenge of creating a majority government. After excluding AfD as a possible coalition partner, he will be forced to negociate with the Social Democratic organization of Germany (SPD), which recorded the worst score in his past – 120 seats in the Bundestag.

The Greens won 85 seats, left-wing Die Linke – 64, and the recently formed left-wing organization of Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) introduced only 1 MP. The outgoing coalition, besides attended by the Liberal Free Democratic organization (FDP), failed – the FDP did not exceed the 5% threshold and thus did not win any mandate.

During the tv debate of political leaders Merz expressed concern about the U.S. abroad policy and stressed the request to build independent European defence capabilities.

"I never thought I'd gotta say this publicly, but after Donald Trump's fresh statements, it became clear that Europe is not much crucial for this American administration," said Merz.

The politician suggested that NATO in its current form may not last until the next summit of the alliance in June and that Europe must accelerate the improvement of its own defence system, independent of Washington.

"I have no illusions about what we can anticipate from America," he stressed.

Merz besides referred to the controversy surrounding the interference of abroad actors in the election campaign. In particular, he criticized Elon Musk, an American billionaire and Trump's close ally, who publically supported AfD.

"The Washington interventions were as dramatic and insolent as those we saw from Moscow," said Merz. "We are under quite a few force from both sides".

His words propose that Germany was in a geopolitical wedge where both Russia and the US influence their interior political processes.

The losing election is Olaf Scholz, the outgoing chancellor and SPD leader, whose ruling coalition (composed of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP) failed to convince voters to proceed their rule. Many Germans blamed Scholz's cabinet for the economical crisis, rising energy prices and deficiency of effective migration policy.

CDU/CSU returns to power after a four-year break, but the fresh government will not have an easy start. Merzem faces hard coalition talks, questions about the form of future abroad policy Germany and the expanding force from AfD, which became the second political force in the country for the first time in history.
