On 22 October, O. Gustavo Gutierrez died, a theologian recognized as 1 of the main authors of Liberation Theology. This note, seeking reconciliation between Catholicism and Marxism, was besides criticized for the pontificate of John Paul II. Gutierrez himself, although not in an authoritative conflict with the Church, heard a call to review the views preached. Nevertheless, Pope Francis honored the deceased in beautiful words. He called Peruvian Dominican “the man of the Church.” The words of the Holy Father were given a strong answer.
– I think of Gustavo and we all pray together for him. May he remainder in peace – said the Pope after the death of the co-founder of “Theology of Liberation”. The Holy Father called the deceased in a speech in the Synodal Hall "a man of the Church who knew to keep silent erstwhile he had to stay silent, knew how to suffer, erstwhile he had to endure suffering." – He could carry so many apostolic fruits and so rich theology – added Francis.
The words of St Peter's successor were answered by Father Jose Luis Aberasturi. In an article for the Spanish portal infocatolica.com, the priest pointed out that through the “most progressive” part of the Gutierrez Church was “sent on a fast road to heaven”.
In the priest’s opinion, however, the Peruvian Dominican received merit only in the eyes of people “about the red soul as scarlet, as the writing says of sin.” However, he did not benefit the Church in any way.
According to the clergyman, the only “great” work to be seen in Gutierrez's life was the creation of “theology of liberation” and its contamination by many Catholic hierarchs in South America.
According to Aberasturi, however, this trend has small to do with theological reflection, or is simply a pretext for giving Christianity a communist return. “It is not a theology, although it rises on it and bases itself on it: The claim that Marxism is the rule of explanation not only of theology but besides of the Word of God... sounds blasphemous,” described Gutierrez's co-founded thought priest.
As the clergy added, the chanting of Gutierrez's “deeds” is at odds with the situation of the Church in South America, which was greatly affected by his thought. Theologically afraid with the liberation of South American Catholicism loses, according to the priest, “to sects, Protestants of all ointments”, as well as widespread violence. Inspiring the continent's hierarchs with the current “theology of liberation” is an crucial origin of the present state of affairs, Fr Aberasturi believes.
The deceased Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez received reproofs and unfavorable words from the mouth of the erstwhile Primate of Peru, Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani.
