Former EU Commissioner for the interior marketplace Thierry Breton warned that if Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidential election, Europe is facing a "deadly crisis".
The nearly 70-year-old Commissioner believes that the triumph of the Republican candidate will be a nail to the coffin for the European Union. In an interview given to BFMTV station on 3 November, Breton spoke of Trump's possible negative influence on European defence, safety and trade. He warned against weakening Western support for Ukraine.
"The United States is Europe's key ally in supporting Ukraine against Russia and we know that the Americans are getting tired of this commitment. It is clear that if... [Trump] is selected, support can dry almost overnight. Sam [Trump] claimed he could suspend the aid within 24 hours – threatened EU policy.
He fears that in the event of Trump's victory, any European bloc associate States may search bilateral agreements straight with Washington, bypassing Brussels. However, in his opinion, this cannot be allowed, as this would mean a "deadly crisis" for Europe.
– We saw what happened in Moldova and Georgia, and we can only imagine the moods in the capitals of the Baltic states, specified as Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, where there is simply a strong concern about NATO's support - He continued.
He added that after the alliance was extended to include Finland, for example, the area had to be protected. Finland shares a 1340-kilometre border with Russia and "refers to NATO, and so to the United States for atomic protection".
Breton noted that Trump had a better knowing of the global dynamics of power, hence he established relations with key leaders specified as Xi Jinping from China, Vladimir Putin from Russia and Viktor Orbán from Hungary.
He resented that "when Donald Trump calls individual in Europe, it is Viktor Orban, not [the EC President] Ursula von der Leyen".
– People must be aware of that. Sure, you may regret it, you may find it frightening, you may say it is impossible, but if Trump wants to know something about Europe, he will not call the president of the European Parliament or the president of the European Commission or even the president of the European Council He stressed.
The Bruxelle politician expressed the horror of conducting a policy supporting conventional families by the American-Hungarian alliance. At the same time, it expects the EC and another EU bodies to have a more assertive policy towards the US in a situation where the Republican president takes power. It points out that Europe must be united and should quit its "precautionary approach" towards Washington. In his view, the federalisation process should velocity up and propose a close follow-up of the study by erstwhile president of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi.
In an interview given “Tribune” on November 2, he said: “Let us not be the last Mohicans. It has been a long time since China or the United States followed the WTO rules." He referred to concerns about the fresh sanctions imposed by the US against China and the disruptions caused by this to the European economy, saying that "we are in a sense a herbivorous dinosaur surrounded by tyrants."
Bretton, an unelected Eurocrat, is simply a strong supporter of preventive censorship in the EU, which digital platforms are forced to do through the Digital Services Act, claiming that it is needed to defend democracy.
