A ticket for mowing a lawn on Sunday? Ridiculous rules return in 2025!

In 2025 there was controversy about the anticipation of imposing a lawn mowing mandate on Sunday. Does this mean the return of absurd regulations limiting our regular activities? Let us take a closer look.

No national bans on mowing grass on Sunday

There are no laws in Poland prohibiting lawn mowing on Sundays or holidays. The Code of Offence shall not contain any evidence relating straight to this activity. This means that from a legal point of view we can mowing grass any day of the week, including Sunday.

Although the law does not impose restrictions, it is worth noting the social aspect of sound generated during lawn mowing. Mowers emit sounds of more than 100 dB, which is comparable to motorcycle sound without a silencer or air hammer. This level of sound can be burdensome for neighbors, especially in the morning or evening.

In order to keep good neighbourly relations and avoid possible conflicts, lawn mowing is recommended in hours that do not disturb night silence. In Poland, it is assumed that night silence lasts from 10:00 to 6:00 in the morning. Therefore, it is best to plan mowing in the afternoon or early days, avoiding both early mornings and late night hours.

Mowing

Some communities may have informal grass mowing rules on Sunday. The desire to keep peace and respect for those who remainder on that day prompts many to avoid noisy gardening on Sundays. However, specified practices are customary and not legally enforced.

Although there are no direct rules prohibiting grass mowing on Sunday, there are general rules on disorderly conduct. According to Article 51(1) of the Code of Offence, a individual who disturbs peace, public order or night remainder through sound may be fined, restricted or arrested. However, in practice specified interventions are uncommon and relate mainly to utmost cases.

To avoid misunderstandings and keep good relations with neighbors, it is worth:

• Inform Neighbors about planned gardening work, especially if the usage of loud equipment is expected.
• Adjust mowing hours until the time of day, avoiding early mornings and late evenings.
• Pay attention to sound levels and effort to keep it to a minimum during gardening.

Remember that while the law does not impose direct restrictions on lawn mowing on Sunday, respect for others and caring for the common good are the foundations of community life.
