The heads of European services inform that Russia can increase aggressive action against NATO countries in the coming months. The Czech BIS service does not exclude limited intrusion into the Alliance's border territory or provocation under the false flag. For Poland this means the request for real strengthening of the defence and readiness of the state.
Warning of European Services
The heads of European intelligence have warned the British paper "The Guardian" that the Kremlin is preparing to step up aggressive action against the NATO state. As reported by the WP News, the Czech BIS service takes into account 2 peculiarly dangerous scenarios: a limited invasion of the Alliance's border area or a false flag operation. The informing horizon is short. I'm talking about the coming months.
This is not the announcement of a full-scale war with NATO. This is simply a signal that Russia can search action sufficiently serious to trigger a crisis, but at the same time sufficiently ambiguous to impede the swift and joint consequence of allies. This mechanics fits well into the logic of hybrid pressure: the opponent examines procedures, the resilience of institutions and the political will to react.
The Kremlin can test NATO cohesion
The warnings of the services coincide with the words of Prime Minister Donald Tusk about Russian attempts to test Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This provision establishes the rule of common defence After an armed attack on 1 of the Alliance members. In practice, however, deterrence acts erstwhile the opponent believes in military efficiency and political solidarity of all NATO. There's no place for vague signals.
That is why concrete preparations are important, not reassuring declarations. Defense plans for NATO's east flank must translate into command, logistics, designation and consequence without undue delay. Russia has been utilizing activities below the threshold of open war for years. Provocation under a false flag could be utilized to make information chaos and dispute over what actually happened.
Poland cannot base safety on hope
For Poland, informing is of direct importance. We are the state of the east flank, and Russian force besides applies to aid routes for Ukraine. Any gap in border protection, critical infrastructure, airspace and communication systems can become a tool of pressure.
The Polish safety policy must not be dependent on the current temper of European capitals. Alliances are needed, but a serious state besides builds its own resilience. This means an efficient military, strong service and administration capable of acting during the crisis. Warnings against Russian NATO Testing should lead to exercises and decisions, not another circular of press conferences.
The stakes are credible deterrence.
The most dangerous script doesn't gotta start with armored columns. It can take the form of an incidental at the border, sabotage or carefully prepared provocation to divide allies. This is the kind of hazard that European services are informing about.
The Polish answer should be sober: without panic, but besides without complacency. The Kremlin will step down where there is readiness and clear will to defend itself. If he sees chaos and delay, he'll press on. For Poles, the safety of borders, the continuity of the functioning of the state and the certainty that the deterrence of NATO has real content are at stake.
