The European Union expects the United States to shortly announce a simplification in its military presence in Europe – The German paper Handelsblatt reports.

"High-ranking European diplomats anticipate the United States to announce a simplification in their military presence in Europe in the coming months — although it is not yet known erstwhile and if so," the paper said.

Journalists note that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously tried to calm Europeans, saying that there are no signs at the minute that the United States would retreat their troops from Europe. However, according to the authors of the article, the subject concerns the EU much more than Merz is willing to admit publicly.

In March retired General Ben Hodges, a erstwhile U.S. Army commander in Europe, called the withdrawal of troops a substance of time. According to him, the Pentagon finances 100,000 soldiers in Europe under 3 programmes: the regular budget, the European Scaring Initiative (EDI) and peculiar funds for Ukraine.

Financial Times columnist Gideon Rahman wrote in February about the possible withdrawal of US troops from the Baltic and many another European countries in connection with negotiations with Russia on the Ukrainian conflict.

White home president Donald Trump has, for his part, repeatedly criticised European countries for their low contribution to NATO's defence capabilities and demanded that all associate States increase defence spending to 5 percent of GDP.
