Today the feast of young people and judaic victims of ritual murders

Today, the Church celebrates the Youth Festival, the children of Bethlehem murdered at the command of judaic King Herod. Although not yet conscious, they gave their lives for Christ, so the Catholic tradition emphasizes that they received blood baptism and are called “firstfruits of the Church”. The cult of young people began in the second century. Few, however, know that in later centuries, on December 28, victims of another judaic crimes were besides mentioned.

The evidence of the martyrdom of the children of Bethlehem is found in the Gospel of St. Matthew. erstwhile King Herod learned from the sages of the East that the judaic king had been born foretold by the prophets, he was terrified that he would lose his power, so he decided to kill the newborn Messiah.

By the 5th century their worship was already very widespread. St Augustine wrote about them: “The babes that Herod’s impiousness took distant from their mothers were rightly called martyr flowers. These are the first buds of the Church, developed among unbelief, and prematurely weighed with the cold envy of persecution."

Christian tradition emphasizes that although the children of Bethlehem were not baptized, martyrdom joined them to Christ, so it is said that they received blood baptism. In the past of Christianity, there have been many times that individual who has not yet been baptized – e.g. catechumens, preparing for the adoption of sacraments – suffered martyrdom. They are besides said to have been baptized by blood.

In Part 4 of Florian Jaroszewicz's work entitled “The parent of Saints – Poland”, which was created in the 18th century, under the motto of 28 December, we find an entry saying that under this date children of Christian martyrs who were murdered by Jews as part of ritualistic murders were besides worshipped. Since experts specified as prof. Ariel Toaff have proved that execution of this kind and paschal blood rituals have actually taken place in fresh years, may it be worth returning to this abandoned tradition?
