Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi expressed his support on the diplomatic efforts of U.S. president Donald Trump. Zuppi, as a peculiar envoy of the Holy See to Ukraine, believes Trump has made large progress.

Cardinal Zuppi is the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference. The Archbishop of Bologna was designated by Pope Francis as a peculiar Vatican envoy to Ukraine. He interviewed both Kiev and Moscow, including children abducted at the beginning of the war by the Russians. Zuppi has diplomatic experience as associated with the Sant’Egidio organization years ago, he mediated in resolving the armed conflict in Mozambique in 1992.

In an interview with the German paper "Der Spiegel" he stated that "the peace initiative of [US president Donald] Trump has made crucial progress". This is primarily about the fact that Ukrainians and Russians resumed dialogue. In the Cardinal's opinion, thanks to the president of the United States, the "hope for peace has indeed increased".

The speeches are rather interesting, that Pope Francis was very critical of president Donald Trump, at the beginning of the pontificate he even stated that he could not call himself a Christian if he wanted to build a wall on the border with Mexico. On the war in Ukraine, however, Pope Bergoglio sought a peaceful solution, explicitly encouraging Ukraine to negotiate.
