DELHI- In a significant step toward strengthening air connectivity between India and the Philippines, officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) recently held discussions with executives from Air India (AI).

The meeting was regarding the possibility of establishing direct flights between the two countries. This development can streamline travel, facilitate business and tourism, and enhance cultural exchanges.

India and Philippines direct flights

The meeting regarding direct flights between India and the Philippines was held on February 18th 2025. Philippines authority provided Air India with crucial insights into the regulatory framework necessary to secure flight approvals from CAAP.

The discussions primarily focused on operational requirements, technical documentation, safety standards, and logistics for initiating direct flights. The Philippine aviation authorities emphasized their commitment to ensuring a smooth approval process while maintaining stringent safety protocols.

Both Air India and CAAP expressed optimism about the potential launch of direct routes. CAAP cited that there is a rising demand for travel between the two nations. The Philippines has been attracting an increasing number of Indian visitors.

The Philippines has become an increasingly attractive destination for Indian tourists in recent years. Factors such as the country’s picturesque beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage have made it a preferred vacation spot. Additionally, the introduction of an e-Visa system for Indian travelers has further simplified the process of visiting the Philippines.

With approximately 79,000 Indian travelers arriving in 2024 – the travel demand saw 12% rise from the previous year. This growing interest in tourism and business exchanges highlights the need for a more seamless and efficient air travel option.

Potential Routes and Airline Participation

Although no final decisions have been made, potential routes for direct flights are expected to include major Indian cities. Cities such as Delhi and Mumbai may connect to Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

Currently, passengers traveling between the two countries must rely on transit hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, or Hong Kong. A direct route would significantly cut travel time and provide passengers with greater convenience.

Aside from Air India, Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo has also shown interest in operating flights on this route. The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has indicated that talks with multiple airlines, including Air India, are progressing positively.

If finalized, this development could mark a significant milestone in expanding air travel options between the two nations.

Boosting Bilateral Relations and Economic Ties

Direct flights between India and the Philippines will strengthen not only tourism but also trade and investment opportunities. The absence of a direct flight has often been cited as a barrier to business expansion and collaboration between Indian and Filipino enterprises.

Establishing a direct route could improve market accessibility for businesses in both countries. It will lead to increased investments in sectors such as technology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and education.

The Indian Ambassador to the Philippines, Shri Harsh Kumar Jain, has also highlighted the importance of direct flights in fostering stronger ties.

He stated that:

“direct connectivity would enhance ‘people-to-people contacts,’ making it easier for Indian and Filipino citizens to travel for work, leisure, and academic purposes.”

According to him, the launch of direct flights between the two nations is likely to happen in the next few months.

Air Services Agreement with Philippines

The Philippines and India have an updated Air Services Agreement (ASA) signed in September 2021. The new ASA is aimed at enhancing aviation connectivity between the two countries. The new agreement was built upon previous agreements from 2018 and 1949. The ASA allows for increased competition by enabling multiple airlines to operate and expand services.

The updated ASA is designed to create a more liberalized aviation market. It will encourage more frequent flights and giving airlines greater flexibility in determining their schedules. Once direct flights are operational, passengers can expect improved connectivity, reduced layover times, and a more competitive pricing structure due to increased airline participation.

With discussions progressing between CAAP and Air India, the launch of direct flights between India and the Philippines appears to be on the horizon. Both parties have agreed to continue collaborating on regulatory procedures, safety standards, and operational requirements to expedite the process.
